Suffolk County Fire, Rescue & Emergency Services

The Suffolk County Department of Fire, Rescue and Emergency Services (FRES) proudly serves 1.5 million residents and supports more than 10,000 emergency responders across Suffolk County. Through a coordinated system of career and volunteer professionals, FRES safeguards lives, property, and critical infrastructure every day.

FRES Mission

The mission of the Suffolk County Department of Fire, Rescue and Emergency Services is to provide coordinated, professional, and reliable emergency services that protect life and property while strengthening the readiness and resilience of Suffolk County communities.

FRES is structured into specialized divisions to ensure efficient response, strong oversight, and continuous support for both career and volunteer fire and EMS agencies throughout the county.

FRES Divisions

Fire Marshal’s Office (FMO)

The Fire Marshal’s Office conducts fire and life safety inspections, code enforcement, and fire investigations throughout Suffolk County. The FMO also provides public education, technical response assistance to Fire and EMS agencies, staffing within the county’s incident command structure, and critical support for emergency management operations.

Emergency Medical Services (EMS)

The Emergency Medical Services Division provides education, coordination, and system oversight for Suffolk County EMS agencies. EMS focuses on emergency preparedness, advanced training opportunities, and continuous quality improvement in collaboration with the Regional Emergency Medical Services Council (REMSCO).

Office of Emergency Management (OEM)

The Office of Emergency Management coordinates Suffolk County’s response to natural and man-made disasters. OEM personnel develop and maintain the Comprehensive All-Hazards Emergency Management Plan, operate the County Emergency Operations Center (EOC), and collaborate with local, state, and federal partners on preparedness, response, recovery, and shelter operations.

Administration (ADMIN)

The Administration Section provides essential operational support including clerical services, human resources coordination, grant management, and financial oversight to ensure the department functions efficiently and responsibly.

Fire Rescue Communications (COMMs)

Candidates must be at least 21 years old by the time they graduate from the academy. Ideal applicants are passionate about public service. BPD offers paid training, mentorship, and career growth opportunities.

Suffolk County’s emergency response system is built on the strength of both career and volunteer professionals. FRES proudly supports volunteer fire and EMS agencies while working alongside career personnel to deliver comprehensive emergency services countywide.
